Freaks tonight with Fotoshop & Håkan Tyg

Tonight’s last minute addition to the Freaks lineup is Fotoshop, one of the latest electronic bands to emerge from Helsinki. The brand new duo have a self-released ep out already, check it out, it’s called Accidents EP.
Also joining the ranks will be our long-time favourite, one of the godfathers of the Helsinki indie-disco scene, Håkan Tyg from Hell’s Kitchen, who will start off the night at the bar. See you at YK!

2010-07-23Heavy lineup again at Cosmic City. Finlands top selektor Enrico from Komposti Sound will bring some solid roots & reggae sounds to Bassement with CHLLNRG from Denmark. CHLLNGR is a focused narrative of futuristic sounds and bass heavy rhythms orchestrated and composed by Steve Borth, a multi-instrumentalist, producer and performer. Having relocated from California to Copenhagen, CHLLNGR has fine-tuned a unique approach to dub, dub-step, electro and beyond.
Main room is full on house music by resident dj Lil Tony and one of best house djs around called Kristian Bayer from Âme . Âme has done too many hits so mention, but still their biggest track in 20th century is Rej. One Detroit legend said that Rej is a future Plastic Dreams which is one of the biggest house track ever made by Jaydee. Watch out, Âme is back in Helsinki.
At our “Panorama” bar is Super Samuli from Nerd Networks spinning 6 hours set of balearic disco, rock and italo records.
23.7. Familjen Live (SWE)
2010-07-23Hiljattain toisen albuminsa “Mänskligheten” julkaissut Familjen saapuu Helsinkiin. Elektroa, indietä ja syntikkapopia sekoitteleva ruotsalaisartisti nousee YK-klubin lavalle perjantaina 23. heinäkuuta. Familjen-nimen takaa löytyy ruotsalainen monilahjakkuus Johan T Karlsson, joka on kunnostautunut paitsi artistina myös tuottajana ja remiksaajana. Parhaiten kolmen vuoden takaisesta, Tellé-levymerkillä (mm. Röyksopp, Kings of Convenience) julkaistusta ”Det snurrar i min skalle” -hitistään tunnettu mies on aikaisemmin vieraillut Suomessa Kentin kiertueen avaajana sekä esiintynyt Monsters of Pop -festivaaleilla. Oman tuotantonsa ohella Familjen on remiksannut esimerkiksi Lykke Li:tä, Rex the Dogia, Fever Rayta ja Kentiä sekä tuottanut ruotsalaista indierock-yhtyettä David & The Citizeniä. Heinäkuisen Suomen konsertin lisäksi Familjen nähdään tulevana kesänä esimerkiksi Ruotsin suurimmilla festivaaleilla Hultsfredissa ja Arvikassa. Familjenin live-keikan ohella YK:ssa nähdään Hannulelauri-duon toisen osapuolen Enderin ja YK:n pystyttäneen Lil’ Tonyn dj-keikat. Alakerran lavalla nähdään laulaja-lauluntekijän Sansan esiintyminen ja DJ puolesta vastaa Katerina. Freaks back in the main room, Femme En Fourrure tonight

Ok, after severe road testing of the venue we’ve finally reached the conclusion that each Freaks night will feature a live band (so, for next week we added Fotoshop to the lineup), with the exception of the MISF*TS residency, which features special guest DJs. More importantly, this means we’ll continue in the main room, hooray!
So this is how it goes: as the doors open at 10pm, the night starts with a warm-up session at the bar (Room 2), and the main room (Room 1) opens at 11.30pm. Tonight is an exception, though, as because of an early night concert at the venue we start at around 11pm and the doors open latest 10.30pm.
Joining MISF*TS and VJ Sakke Soini tonight with an exclusive DJ set will be one of the most exciting acts in new Finnish electronic music, Femme En Fourrure, who have caused quite a stir with their stylish blend of contemporary house music. FOLK-YHTYE A HAWK AND A HACKSAW (USA) ENSI KERTAA SUOMEEN TO 22.7.2010
2010-07-21Balkanilaista folkia, klezmeria sekä indiepopia yhdistelevä A Hawk And A Hacksaw saapuu heinäkuussa vihdoin ja viimein Suomeen. Kulttiyhtye Neutral Mik Hotelin rumpalin Jeremy Barnesin johtama yhdysvaltalaisbändi nousee kesän alussa avattavan Club YK:n lavalle torstaina 22. heinäkuuta.
…Multi-instrumentalisti Barnesin aiemman kokoonpanon, indiepop-yhtye Neutral Milk Hotelin hajottua vuonna 1998 mies päätyi matkustelemaan Euroopassa. Tutustuttuaan erityisesti Itä-Euroopan musiikkitraditioihin Barnes perusti A Hawk And A Hacksaw:n Pariisissa vuonna 2001. Alunperin uusi yhtye oli Barnesin sooloprojekti, mutta jo pian artisti tapasi viulisti Heather Trostin, josta on sittemmin tullut kokoonpanon toinen voimahahmo ja Barnesin elämänkumppani.
A Hawk And A Hacksaw ammentaa vaikutteitaan traditionaalisesta ranskalaisesta, turkkilaisesta ja unkarilaisesta musiikkiperinteestä yhdistellen niitä amerikkalaiseen folkiin sekä modernimpaan vaihtoehtopopilmaisuun. Bändin sanotaankin olleen tärkeimpiä pioneereja maailmanmusiikin ja amerikkalaisen indierockin yhdistelijänä, ja vuosien varrella niin Beirutin kuin Gogol Bordellonkin kaltaiset yhtyeet ovat niittäneet mainetta A Hawk And A Hacksaw:n jalanjäljissä. Barnes ja Trost olivat myös Beirut-yhtyeen varhaisen inkarnaation ensimmäisiä jäseniä, ja yhteistyö bändin nokkamiehen Zach Condonin kanssa on jatkunut tiiviinä myös viime vuosina.
Yhtye on vuosien varrella tehnyt yhteistyötä myös lukuisten itäeurooppalaisten muusikoiden, kuten Ilosaarirockissakin vierailleen Fanfare Ciocarlian, kanssa. A Hawk And A Hacksaw:n menestys-ep “A Hawk And A Hacksaw and the Hun Hangár Ensemble” (2007) sai jatkoa viime vuonna, kun yhtyeen neljäs albumi “Délivrance” ilmestyi toukokuussa 2009 The Leaf Label -levymerkillä (mm. Efterklang, Oh No Ono, Vladislav Delay).
A Hawk And A Hacksaw on kiertänyt maailmaa esimerkiksi Wilcon, Of Montrealin ja Calexicon kanssa. Vuonna 2008 yhtye soitti Portisheadin kuratoimilla All Tomorrow´s Parties -festivaaleilla ja kiersi myöhemmin samana vuonna Eurooppaa Portisheadin lämmittelijänä.
