Tonight we mix things up as MISF*TS will be joined by our favourite designer-dj Daniel Palillo, who will play some “free & easy” gems in the early hours and of course a load of full-on party bombs later in the night. Craziness expected!
Also check out the full amazing “Freaks” photo shoot by Daniel Palillo and Kaarle Hurtig after the jump.
Tonight at Freaks we celebrate the release of Dinosauruxia’s new EP “Time Is Unfolding”, released on Misf*tsounds today as a limited edition cassette and on 8th of September digitally. The EP contains four songs, two which have been enchanting audiences at the duo’s gigs all year, and two previously unheard creations. Check out the teaser video and hear the song “Sky (Time Is Unfolding)” below and take a look at the whole amazing photo shoot with Helen Korpak here.
Dinosauruxia’s showtime 23.45 / 11.45PM, see you there!
As the first international guest at Freaks, we’re honoured to welcome a truly mysterious character behind one of the most original and inspired releases of recent times. The album is called “A Sufi and a Killer” and the man behind it is Gonjasufi. Here’s what Pitchfork, who gave the album a Best new music -nomination, has to say about the man, and check out Dazed Digital’s interview with Gonjasufi and The Gaslamp Killer below.
“Gonjasufi is the latest musical incarnation of Sumach Ecks, a rapper-singer-yoga teacher currently living in Las Vegas. Though he’s been making hip-hop records since the early 90s and has released music with the San Diego-based Masters of the Universe crew, it’s his recent singles as Gonjasufi– from his forthcoming Warp debut LP A Sufi and a Killer (out March 9)– that are gaining him more notice than ever before. The album features worn-in, Dilla-descended production from L.A.’s the Gaslamp Killer, Mainframe, and Flying Lotus (Gonjasufi was featured on “Testament” off FlyLo’s Los Angeles), but the unequivocal star is Ecks’s voice– a scraggly, scary, smoked-out croak that creeps like the spiritual offspring of George Clinton and Leadbelly. “ -Pitchfork
As a warm up for Gonjasufi we’ll have, as a last minute addition, Dead-O, one of Finland’s dubstep heavyweights, known also from the groundbreaking band Clouds, with an eclectic warm up set spanning everything from rap to dubstep and beyond. UPDATE: Also featuring Moonlit Man (Ghetto Tyylit) at the Bar/Room 2. Schedule for the night after the jump.
Ok, so the summer’s biggest weekend is finally here, and in between last night’s LCD and Chem Bros concert and the main event, we’ll warm up for the Flow Festival tonight at Freaks. As tonight’s guests MISF*TS welcomes the Emperatron whizz-kids, who make their debut in YK’s main room, as well as Ercola with his live set, and as a last minute addition Flipperi (Top Billin), Ais-T and their Music People guests Dip Some and Starv Vader at the bar aka. Room 2. Schedule for the night after the jump.
Also remember to check out MISF*TS at Flow: Tent Club stage on Friday right after The Drums around 23.30 and Dinosauruxia at the Tent stage on Sunday at 14.10.
Tonight’s guest at Freaks is Jaakko Eino Kalevi, one of Helsinki’s most fabulous and versatile “freaks” indeed – a tram driver, a model, and most importantly one of the most original artists in the Finnish electronic scene. Jaakko’s unique blend of disco, lo-fi electronics and anything from dub to jazz has earned him a growing number of followers since his debut album in 2007. Also, the sophomore album “Modern Life”, released earlier this year on the Helmi Levyt label, establishes Jaakko Eino Kalevi as possibly Finlands best answer to the current “glo-fi”/”chillwave” trend.
See the cool video for “Poison” and hear the stand out track “Flexible Heart” below, and read Jaakko’s own sleeve notes about the album after the jump.
Also known for his amazing solo gigs, this time Jaakko brings over his full 4-piece band lineup, so a great show is guaranteed!
Tonight’s last minute addition to the Freaks lineup is Fotoshop, one of the latest electronic bands to emerge from Helsinki. The brand new duo have a self-released ep out already, check it out, it’s called Accidents EP.
Also joining the ranks will be our long-time favourite, one of the godfathers of the Helsinki indie-disco scene, Håkan Tyg from Hell’s Kitchen, who will start off the night at the bar. See you at YK!
Ok, after severe road testing of the venue we’ve finally reached the conclusion that each Freaks night will feature a live band (so, for next week we added Fotoshop to the lineup), with the exception of the MISF*TS residency, which features special guest DJs. More importantly, this means we’ll continue in the main room, hooray!
So this is how it goes: as the doors open at 10pm, the night starts with a warm-up session at the bar (Room 2), and the main room (Room 1) opens at 11.30pm. Tonight is an exception, though, as because of an early night concert at the venue we start at around 11pm and the doors open latest 10.30pm.
Joining MISF*TS and VJ Sakke Soini tonight with an exclusive DJ set will be one of the most exciting acts in new Finnish electronic music, Femme En Fourrure, who have caused quite a stir with their stylish blend of contemporary house music. Check out their video below, more info and links after the jump.

This Thursday, Daniel Palillo returns to Freaks to take over the bar with myself. For those who don’t know, Daniel, who together with Kaarle Hurtig is also responsible for the photography series shown here, is among the greatest young fashion designers in Finland. Known for his edgy clothing, dark themes and oversized silhouettes, as well as playful prints, he cites music as one of his biggest inspirations and considers his clothing to be a mix between gothic, metal and hip hop. And as a matter of fact he’s also one of the funniest DJs around, so total craziness expected!
A late thank you to everyone who made it to the opening party on 10th June. The night was conducted in a truly freakish manner, while Daniel Palillo stole the show in the bar with some ridiculous party hits. More photos from the night after the jump, check them out!
Due to popular demand, we’ll start focusing more on the Room 2 aka. the “panorama” bar. From this Thursday onwards, all Freaks DJ nights, with the exception of the monthly Misf*ts residency, will be held at this cool space, making it packed to the rafters. Band nights and Misf*ts gigs with guest DJs will take place at the Room 1 as usual.
Taking care of DJ duties this week will be myself and Shoplifter, joined by the one and only Jaakko Eino Kalevi, the coolest and weirdest tram driver in Helsinki, or possibly in the whole Northern Hemisphere. So, let’s go crazy at the bar!
One of our favourite new bands from Finland, Zebra and Snake, release a new EP digitally tomorrow, and we are hosting the launch party tonight at Freaks. The tracks on the Nighttime EP have been produced by Kaiku Studios Berlin, with T.A. Kaukolampi of Annie and Op:l Bastards fame acting as a guest producer on one title. The release also includes nine remixes by Finnish heroes including MVSEVM, Obi Blanche, Helsinki 78-82, Hannulelauri, Femme En Fourrure and many more. This marks also the premiere of their new video for the song Big Bad Drummer, posted above.
Catch Zebra and Snake live around midnight. Also in the line-up: Erkko (MISF*TS) & Harvest in the Room 1, Nonperson and Rrkk at the Bassheads dubstep night in the Room 3 downstairs. See you tonight!
The oldest weekly night in Finland. Monday is the day to get down with DJ Taste, DJ Ewok, DJ Spinny & Friends. Rähinä Records garantee for quality music and a crazy party!
